Gynaecology is the specialty that deals with the care of the female reproductive system, which includes the vagina, cervix, ovaries and uterus. A series of changes, functions, conditions and diseases affect women throughout their stages of life, and in some cases a referral to the consultant gynaecologist is either recommended or necessary.
Gynaecological issues may be symptomatic or asymptomatic, and range from menstrual cycle problems and pelvic pain to ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps, abnormal smears and menopause.
Some women may choose to have regular gynaecology checks as preventative medicine rather than seeing a gynaecologist if they suspect a problem. Availability and easy access to screening smear tests and ultrasound scans of the pelvis help put the mind at rest for women who worry and for those with family or past history of gynaecological problems.
Depending on your personal and medical circumstances, I provide expert advice, organise tests, perform an examination and an ultrasound scan, as well as recommend and perform surgery if appropriate. I have expertise in open, hysteroscopic and laparoscopic (key-hole) gynaecology surgery.
